David Eby and Lisa Beare know my daughter, Emma Raquel Sullivan of SD61. They are well aware of the totality of her circumstances and why I am supporting this petition. That parents and others have to go this far speaks to the continued denial of the violations of human and civil rights our children experience in the education system, which includes state sanctioned violence.
I am a CEA. Our students need every bit of help they can get! There is so much money in this world, saving money by cutting funding to schools is ridiculous! Money should be pouring into every crack in our school system. Helping students thrive by having enough staff support and student programs is preventative to having to spend money in the future to fix problems created by poor school funding. Do better please! Our students and staff depend on it.
I have a kindergartner who is currently part of the mandarin program, and this program has been proposed to phase out removing opportunities for future families and students to learn the language and culture. Language program schools, like Mandarin is already challenging to get into, taking this program away will make access for families even more challenging to apply at other schools which already have long waitlists. In our current society of multiculturalism, taking away this language is limiting the future generations’ opportunity to learn about other cultures and languages. This is the age our children can learn a new language and learn with their friends, to celebrate the culture.
There are currently only 3 elementary schools that offer the mandarin program, and by phasing out the mandarin program at one of the schools will make it challenging to have families be a part of this unique program. The teachers do a great job in sharing the culture and language, it needs to be preserved in the school system while we have the resources!
Every year I can see the teachers are struggling more and more due to lack of funding. Most classrooms have children who are falling through the cracks because there aren't enough resources. How are children supposed to learn in an environment that is dirty (with cutting custodian budget), have access to books (cutting librarian hours), not be able to follow BC curriculum? There aren't enough equipment and textbooks to properly learn! The students are not receiving the level of care and education they deserve and it's putting added stress on families.
As a recently retired music educator I am not unaccustomed to these attacks on arts and education - we constantly need to fight for a wholistic educational experience for our youth. I have first hand witnessed the joy and power of music on the development of our youth in schools - it is essential to the well being and emotional development of our youth .
Premier Eby,
Look to the south for the effect of education budget cuts over decades. It doesn't get any clearer than that. You get millions of people who are not well educated and can be easily manipulated.
My daughter, all our kids deserve the best education. Prioritize, invest in our children now and ensure the funding remains for decades to come.
Schools in BC are struggling to meet student needs. Not just providing support for all student needs, but just to have enough paper and pencils for students. Parents and education stakeholders have been sounding the alarm for years. How we provide for our children sets the basic standards for our country. We must do better!
I work in a school and see first hand how cuts are directly affecting kids. We are already underfunded and struggling to provide adequate supports and space for our complex special needs students. These cuts also will affect my own 2 kids. School closures, program cuts, staffing losses, Overcrowding, aging schools denied funds for upgrades. This is devastating to everyone. INVEST IN OUR FUTURE.
