Having lived firsthand the lifelong positive influence that quality music instruction can have on young students, I am a believer in the transformative power of music because it benefits students in all aspects of learning. Currently, the school boards in Barrie Simcoe-Muskoka are scrutinizing upcoming budgets. As opposed to cutting music (again), they must continue supporting and growing music programs. Here's just a few reasons why;

The extensive body of research on this subject verifies the critical role played by music education in academic achievement. Not only does it enhance overall student performance, but it also shows significant improvement in STEM scores. Attendance and student engagement rates are stimulated and the ripple effects on mental health cannot be overstated. The benefits of music, whether as a participant or consumer, last a lifetime.

Despite these compelling benefits, our government and school boards are undermining this invaluable tool. This is not just a blind spot in their strategic planning, but a retreat from their commitment to provide a complete and well-rounded education for our future generations.
