Save Wrexham Music Service

The Issue

Wrexham Council are proposing £116 000 worth of cuts for the Music Service over the next two years. This reduction would directly result in loss of work for peripatetic music teachers and lack of exposure to music for many young people across the WrexhamCounty.

Music education is vital to human development for a number of reasons. It has the ability to increase an individual’s self confidence, motivation and self esteem, and encourages social integration. It is a subject that dissolves boundaries of age and class difference, and has a positive effect on a child's performance in other subjects at school; such as learning listening skills, working towards targets, multi tasking, and working as a team.

My life would be very different if it weren't for the Wrexham Music Service. Now a professional musician (double bassist), my music making started at grass roots, when a peripatetic violin teacher came and played at my junior school and asked "who wants to learn the violin?". I jumped at the chance, and have never looked back. Music making during my school years was certainly vital to my development. It gave me a sense of belonging, escapism from stress, self confidence, fantastic school holidays on county orchestra courses, and life long friendships to name a few. I would not be doing what I do if it weren't for the dedicated staffs at Wrexham Music Service, who are passionate about sharing music with who ever will listen. I know others, who now work as lawyers, personal trainers, doctors, and more, who also feel that music had a positive impact on their lives whilst growing up.

Music Services are in danger across the UK, and we cannot let Wrexham be another casualty to the decreasing advocacy of the arts. To take this opportunity away from young people in our county would be to rob them of life experiences that will shape them for the better.

The final decision making meeting is now on 10 December, where the petition will be presented to the Council with a statement. Please, if you have a minute, music maker or no, take a second to sign this petition. Thank you.
