Make The Avenue, Mount Saint Thomas, Safer for Everyone

Make The Avenue, Mount Saint Thomas, Safer for Everyone
The issue
Residents, locals and friends of 2500,
The Avenue, Mount Saint Thomas 2500, is treated as a busy thoroughfare linking Figtree and Wollongong, even though it is a narrow, residential, two-lane street.
The Avenue, as locals know, is also dangerous, with an accident waiting to happen.
''Our problem here is our community can’t move around its own suburb."
Local mum and resident, Belinda
NO PEDESTRIAN ACCESS
- Unsafe for kids walking to and from school
- Unsafe for parents with prams
- Unsafe for the elderly
Mount Saint Thomas and Mangerton is home to young families and an aging population. Many residents walk along The Avenue either to get to the local Mount Saint Thomas primary school, cafes, parks, train station or to Figtree Grove for groceries.
Here is what you would find if you walked along The Avenue:
- No footpaths
- Inaccessible verge
- Busy road
- Speeding traffic
- Sloping blocks
- Dirt tracks
"I have done the walk along The Avenue a couple of times from my son's school to home and it's quite unnerving with the speeds of the cars, the closeness that they get to the parked cars and also the complete lack of path. There is literally no path. Just dirt, roots and driveways."
Local dad, Jack
Not safe for anyone, let alone kids and the elderly.
Try walking with a pram - you have no choice but to walk on the busy road in some instances. Not safe.
The Avenue is a 40kph zone, however locals know that this isn't usually adhered to. Speeding vehicles are an all too often occurrence morning, day and night.
The problem is only getting worse as Wollongong expands and The Avenue is used more and more as a thoroughfare between Wollongong and Figtree/Unanderra.
We are asking you to sign in support of this petition, and call on Wollongong City Council to provide safe pedestrian access along The Avenue, and enforce the 40kph speed limit. Anything less than this is not acceptable!
We demand - at the very minimum:
- Footpaths
- Speed humps
As well as:
- Wombat crossings
- Roundabouts at busy intersections
- Better road markings and signage to enforce the 40kph speed limit
"There is an immediate endangerment to pedestrians who use The Avenue; especially the section of road between Television Avenue and Taronga Avenue.... I've been a Mount St Thomas local for almost 12 years and have enjoyed seeing the area grow with new families, however I've been disappointed at the zero uplift in the betterment of infrastructure to protect pedestrians."
