Support Leaders Who Support an African-American Studies Class in WSFCS!

The Issue

To date there are over 30 failing schools in Winston Salem Forsyth County Schools. Black and brown students are most affected! This means that ALL children are affected! Hate Out of Winston & The Ministry of Education (LOC) has been asking the Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools to address equity in two ways.

1. Making African-American Studies a class required for graduation

2. Infusing the curriculum in grades K-12 *at the transformation level.

We are asking for this because we believe African American history is beneficial to ALL students. Specifically, this class is needed to address the following issues in our schools:

  • Equity. Students deserve to learn about themselves and their peers.
  • Closing the Achievement Gap. Let’s improve the performance of all youth in reading and math by encouraging critical thinking skills using culturally relevant material.
  • Engaging Students. Students should be able to be taught with material that is culturally & linguistically relevant.
  • Respecting Diversity. In a school system that has seen an surge in racially motivated incidents, particularly towards African Americans, students need to learn about the contributions and transformative impact African-Americans have had on historically and contemporarily (locally, nationally and internationally) to facilitate respect for each other.
  • Correcting Institutional Bias. This class would be an asset in a district that has faced scrutiny from the Office of Civil Rights for having a disproportionate discipline of black students.
Preparing our students for college. Let’s provide the opportunity for students to learn what colleges expect them to know.

We NEED YOU TO HELP US MAKE WSFCS an equitable institution of learning. Please sign pledging your support. After all, we are the city of arts and innovation and strong cities need strong and equitable schools to attract great people!
