Keep Clean Seas Kingfish out of Fitzgerald Bay & Point Lowly marina!
The issue
The return of kingfish aquaculture to Fitzgerald Bay with approval for Clean Seas to double their previous production is of great concern. The sheer volume of nutrient pollution from these farms will be enough to destroy seagrasses as occurred with comparable nutrient pollution discharges off the Adelaide coastline. There are also legitimate concerns for the future of the Giant Cuttlefish population. During the previous fish farming period, their population declined and only recovered after the farms were abandoned and water quality naturally improved. Escaped kingfish also impact the environment, with the reported escapees alone numbering almost 100,000 over the past 20 years. The Upper Spencer Gulf marine environment is special and important to scientists, fishers, shack owners, tourists and the wider community, it is also a Marine Park. It is already in decline and needs to be managed for recovery, not placed under further stress. Do the potential benefits outweigh the risks? We, the undersigned, think not.
