The Issue

The users of the Vancouver Aquatic Centre are deeply affected by the City of Vancouver’s plan to reduce the size and scope of our beloved and historic Vancouver Aquatic Centre pool and build a 25m pool on the current site. The plans are set to go before the Vancouver Park Board for approval on Monday, February 24 at 6:30 pm.

This plan will see a reduction of our cherished 50 metre pool to a 25 metre pool, casting aside the results from many years of public consultation, planning, public hearings, and ignoring the 2022 Plebiscite, AND will result in the closure of the current facility during the many years while it is under construction. This proposed shrinking of the lap pool would reduce a public amenity vital for health, wellbeing, and sport in our growing community. The Architects/Consultants, having received over 10 million dollars for the project, have fallen well short of the mandate that identified the 50m pool as the top priority.

Every signature counts. Help us to hold the City of Vancouver, the Vancouver Park Board, and the Architects/Consultants accountable. Let the Park Board and City Council know that we value and want to continue the legacy of the 50m pool in the heart of our city and that it would be devastating to the youth, adults and seniors in our community to lose another aquatic facility for many years during the construction of the new facility. We urge our Park Board and City Council to consider a responsible and forward-thinking approach of building a new 50-meter pool while preserving our existing facilities.
