The Issue

We are deeply disappointed that Maine Congressman Jared Golden has once again voted against the House War Powers Resolution bill, this time casting the only Democratic vote against the bill, which resulted in the bill being defeated by one vote. Golden’s explanation for voting against the bill boils down to that he thinks the passage of the bill would weaken our negotiating position in Iran, and that President Trump has not done anything illegal. Similar to what Susan Collins has conveyed in her voting against the bill, Golden said that if the war lasts more than 60 days then Trump needs to consult with Congress, and that he is opposed to sending troops into Iran. However, we believe that Golden, as well as Collins, is missing a key ingredient here, aside from the issue of whether or not our bombing Iran is an act of war (we and many others certainly believe that it is). This key issue for us is the mental disturbance and dangerous mental instability and irrationality of the current United States president, who has the power to unleash the nuclear holocaust of World War III. Trump recently threatened to bomb Iran back to the stone age; i.e., to destroy their entire civilization overnight. We most definitely think that Trump should be removed from office by the 25th amendment, or be removed from office after being impeached, both of which a number of members of Congress have conveyed. But the reality is that there is no way that either of these things is going to happen, given the current United States political environment. Therefore we think that right now the most important thing that Congress can do is to at least pass a war powers resolution bill that requires Trump to consult with Congress before deciding to drop a nuclear bomb and wipe out an entire civilization overnight. We understand that Trump would veto this bill even if passed, and that there is not enough opposition in Congress to override his veto. But we think that Congress passing this bill would be a powerful statement for the United States to make, and may very well influence Trump to think twice about further destruction that he wants to do. And it is primarily for this reason that we are so deeply disappointed that Maine Congressman Jared Golden has voted against the War Powers Resolution bill.
