Do not change our Consumer Protection and Life Safety codes.

The Issue

Removing training, required to safely install systems that have a potential to cause death and destroy property, is an affront to the citizens of Washington that asked for this consumer protection.
Removing certified provisions to protect the life and property of our communities does not represent the wishes of Washington voters.
There are tens of thousands of safe, certified workers professionally installing hot water heaters, gas burning appliances, fire and security alarms and similar household appliances.
When improperly installed, these complex systems can cause explosions, fire, death and property destruction, failing to protect our children, our elderly and our citizens.
Do not be miss led. A home owner can work on their own home and they assume the liability if something blows up or catches fire. However, if they are paying someone to install these for them, training, certification, licensing, bonding and insurance is necessary to ensure the homeowner’s safety.
There is no need for this reckless bill.
Do not allow companies without required state certifications and licenses to send a worker with no electrical certification, or experience, to work on electrical systems. Do not allow unlicensed plumbers install potentially explosive gas appliances in your home.
Keep consumer protection codes in place as written. We Oppose SB 5845, 5846, 5281, 5282, HB 1608, 1609, and 1876.

U.S. fire departments responded to an estimated annual average of 47,820 reported home structure fires involving electrical failure or malfunction 2007-2011. These fires resulted in 455 civilian deaths, 1,518 civilian injuries and $1.5 billion in direct property damage.
National Fire Protection Agency - Home Electrical Fires

The National Fire Protection Agency reported that U.S. fire departments respond to over 3,200 gas-related residency fires per year. Natural gas accounts for roughly 2,000 of these cases. The most common areas that these fires begin include stovetops, outdoor cooking areas, and water heaters.
