The Issue

The Eaton Canyon fire swept through Altadena, California, leaving devastation in its wake. My own home was among those tragically lost to the flames. The emotional toll of losing a home is immeasurable, but the financial burden that follows can be just as overwhelming. While insurance can cover part of the rebuilding costs, the fees associated with building permits are astronomical and daunting to handle out of pocket.

The City of Los Angeles acknowledged this struggle and took a compassionate stance by waiving building permit fees for their fire victims. This proactive measure has provided immense relief and allowed survivors to focus on rebuilding their lives and homes without the added stress of financial constraint.

Unfortunately, the same relief has not been extended to us in Altadena, causing undue hardship as we strive to rise from the ashes. The Los Angeles County supervisors have the power to bring regulatory parity by waiving building permit fees for Eaton Canyon fire victims, just as the city has done.

By doing so, they would not only demonstrate empathy and support for their constituents in a time of need, but also empower us to rebuild and reclaim our community without the added financial strain. Such a move would reflect a commitment to helping residents recover swiftly and restore the vibrant spirit of Altadena.

Let's call on the Los Angeles County supervisors to enact this change, providing us with the same support and recognition accorded to the City of Los Angeles. Sign this petition to urge our county leaders to waive the building permit fees and help us rebuild our homes and lives.

Thank you for your overwhelming response.

I am amending this petition to include our fellow Pasadena and Sierra Madre residents. We are requesting that Mayor Gordo and the Sierra Madre City Council follow Mayor Bass' footsteps in helping rebuild our cities.
