Non-detrimental policies for third year students during COVID-19
The Issue
The University of Central Lancashire want to ensure 3rd year students are not ‘disproportionately advantaged compared to peers in previous years’. Because of this, they are refusing to have a non-detrimental policy in place for students completing their dissertations.
No other students have ever been through a global pandemic and thrown into the circumstances that students are currently going through, so how can we be compared to previous years?!
Students have had online teaching since March 2020 (still paying full price for the degree!) and many will agree online teaching is no where near the standard of face to face teaching! Students now have children at home, they have to be carers for vulnerable loved ones, some being key workers and working extra hours to fight against COVID-19 and are struggling to work around work and university.
Students have been disadvantaged from the start of this pandemic, the university must understand that we need extra support!
Having a non-detrimental policy, or even a modified policy in place to ensure dissertation grades will be stabilised, will make students feel supported and recognised by the university. It is understandable the university does not want us to be deemed advantaged but the reality is, students have been disadvantaged from the start of this pandemic now in particular, dissertation students!
