The Issue

In today's interconnected world, respect and equality among nations have become more crucial than ever. It is with this in mind that I am advocating for a significant change in how English-speaking countries refer to other nations. This petition stems from a simple yet powerful belief: all countries should be equal.

If English-speaking nations can respect the preferred names of some countries, such as Türkiye replacing Turkey, Czechia preferred over the Czech Republic, and Cabo Verde instead of Cape Verde, then it is only fair to extend this courtesy to all countries. Notably, countries like Deutschland (Germany), Suomi (Finland), Nippon (Japan), and Côte D’Ivoire (Ivory Coast) should also have their self-chosen names used in English contexts. This change is not merely about nomenclature; it is about acknowledging and respecting the identity and culture each nation embodies.

Changing how we refer to countries in our language may seem like a small step, but it carries substantial significance in promoting international respect and equality. We already have precedents of nations whose names are honored in this way; therefore, we can, and should, expand this respect universally. Doing so would not only enhance diplomatic relations but also foster a greater sense of global unity and understanding.

Implementing this change is achievable. Governments, educational institutions, media organizations, and cultural bodies are key players in this transition. They possess the resources and platforms necessary to influence public perception and normalize the use of native country names across English-speaking countries. While the change may take time, planning and proactive steps can ensure a smooth transition.

Additionally, providing educational resources about the historical and cultural backgrounds of each country's name can assist in this transition. This will allow people to appreciate the reasoning behind each native name, fostering a more profound respect and connection with cultures worldwide.

This petition calls upon policymakers, educators, media executives, and cultural leaders to take action towards adopting native country names as the standard in English-speaking environments. Such a shift is a celebration of diversity and a step towards genuine equality among nations.

Please join me in supporting this initiative to transform how English-speaking countries name others, reflecting a world where every nation is respected equally. Sign this petition to affirm your belief in global equality and cultural respect.
