I am asking media outlets to consider using more sensitive language when reporting causes of death.

While I understand the importance of accuracy, explicitly naming illnesses such as “cancer” can be distressing for affected families and for those with personal experiences of these conditions. I believe that, where appropriate, using broader terms like “after an illness” could offer a more compassionate approach.

This small change could help promote greater empathy, respect, and dignity in how loss is communicated.

I urge editors and journalists to consider adopting more thoughtful language in these situations.
