Provide Financial Assistance for a DACA Student

Provide Financial Assistance for a DACA Student

The Issue

My name is Karla Sanchez. I am a DACA undocumented student who currently resides in the state of South Carolina. I graduated from high school in 2014 with a 4.2 GPA. I applied to several universities such as: College of Charleston, University of South Carolina, Converse College, and Johnson and Wales. All of which I was accepted to but could not attend. Due to the out-of-state tuition rates and being denied any financial aid, I was not able to go forth with the application process for either one of those colleges. I thought college was completely out of the picture for me, but my mother pushed me to continue and not let the cost of education deny me the right of being successful. I can proudly say that I will soon be graduating from York Technical College with an Associate of Arts degree this May. Yes, I was still charged out-of-state. My mother and I have worked so hard to come this far and it should not end here. Besides the stress, long days and nights with work and school, we have been able to pay out of pocket, slowly but surely. Tuition for a technical college is one thing and university tuition is another. I want to continue my education at a four year university. I was not able to right after high school, but now I believe I should. I am applying to several colleges in and out of state. Unfortunately, in South Carolina I will still be charged as an out-of-state student. No matter where I go, it will be the same. The fact that I may have to leave my family and pursue an education elsewhere is not fair. I should be able to stay close to my family and to my home. I should be able to graduate from a four year university without these unnecessary struggles. I want to continue my education until I finally reach my intended major, International Business. It may take longer than the remaining two years, it may take three or even four. I have gone through so many scholarship applications. I have not received anything, but yet I do and will continue to apply. I am currently finishing my transfer applications and with the hope that one of them will help. Hopefully soon students like me will not have to go through these unnecessary obstacles. If one wants to be educated and successful, they should not have to go through this.
