US President, US House of Representatives, US Sentate: Allow Popular Vote to decide US Presidential Elections

The Issue

The old system of Electoral College votes is outdated. Every American citizen should be able to vote knowing that their vote is as important as all others. In the 2012 election, CNN projected the winner of the Presidential election before the polls in Alaska even closed, only seconds after the west coast polls closed, and before any votes were reported from any of the west coast states. This simply shows these voters that their vote is less important. Regardless of how Alaskians voted, it did not affect the election. I personally know many citizens who do not vote simply because they have the perception that their vote does not actually count. An effective leader understand that perception is key to communication and trust. It's time to tell the American people that their vote really does matter. Allow Popular Vote to decide US Presidential Elections.

(More info added 11/10/2012:

The request for popular vote to decide elections has absolutely nothing to do with who won the 2012 election.  President Obama won the election by Electoral Vote as well as Popular Vote.  The problem I have with the Electoral College voting system is:  The election is often over before all time zones have finished voting.  Using the 2012 election for example, the electoral vote was reached hours before all votes were cast.  Some Americans were standing in line until midnight on election night waiting to cast their vote (often due to malfunctioning machines or other issues).  However, the election was decided long before then.  What does that say to those Americans who stood for hours to make sure their vote was counted.   Alaska polls were still open when the election was deemed over and Governor Romeny had given his fairwell speech!   Consider also, using the Popular Vote:  Obama-50%/Romney 48%.....Using Electoral College Vote:  Obama: 62%/Romney 38%.  Honestly, forget about who you wanted to win, whether your candidate was elected or not, do these numbers REALLY reflect the votes of Americans?  Obviously not.  I understand that there was a time that Electoral Votes were necessary  (like when strong  southern states were full of controlling idiots who manipulated and control the votes of black citizens).  Today, however, it is no longer the way to ensure fair voting.   It’s time to make a change.  Let ALL American’s know their vote really WILL make a difference.  Who knows, maybe even more people will turn out at the polls to vote!)
