Urgently save South Perth's foreshore from a recklessly moored 300-person tavern
The issue
A vessel purported to have gained a 300-person liquor licence and set to become a fixture on the South Perth foreshore with a "Tavern Land Use" purpose has prompted concerns of local residents.
When those associated with the vessel previously applied for a tavern licence for 300 patrons, WA Police raised concerns about noise and pollution — even when operating in the middle of the Swan River. Now this vessel threatens to disrupt the peace and natural beauty of our beloved South Perth shoreline unless swift action is taken.
If you enjoy romantic wedding proposals, peaceful baby showers, sweet 16 birthday parties and champagne brunch picnics on the foreshore or just the view you should read more on https://www.dbca.wa.gov.au/licences-and-permits/riverpark-development-and-planning/new-floating-venue-with-public-jetty-and-boat-moorings-swan-river-south
The proposal is to tack the vessel on to the environmentally vulnerable Mindeerup precinct — home to swans, pelicans and dolphins — alongside a children’s playground frequented by families on their way to the zoo, and near established restaurants that currently coexist harmoniously with residents and local businesses.
To grant this floating raft a tavern licence and then permit it to relocate without detailed consultation demands an urgent community response. The objection deadline is 19 January 2026.
South Perth residents feel left in the dark, without so much as a sign at the proposed location. Proceeding in the manner proposed is not only unjust; it risks a detrimental outcome for all. The collective wellbeing and safety of our neighbourhood, as well as the interests of established local businesses, must prevail.
The introduction of this vessel — adapted or not — poses significant risks for South Perth. Increased noise pollution is highly likely. Local wildlife may be impacted. Traffic congestion will likely worsen, affecting residents’ access to and from their homes. The lack of public transport, inadequate parking, limited public toilets, insufficient night lights and increased pressure on sewage and waste management systems threaten the health of the foreshore, the safety of people and property and may well impact local property values.
South Perth is currently a sanctuary for families, sports enthusiasts, tourists and businesses.
A $2 million privately funded “cantilevered boardwalk” and “gangway,” to a vessel on our foreshore is not acceptable. South Perth deserves better. This proposal is not bespoke, not fit for purpose, and not designed with the current or future precinct in mind.
Local infrastructure is not equipped to support this development. Extensive and independent assessments must be commissioned, including a full Urban Design Report and a comprehensive Social Impact Assessment.
It is crucial to prioritise the voices of those who call South Perth home, as well as those who love to visit. By signing a petition, making a submission or contacting the local representatives for the area you can demand an immediate halt to the relocation of this vessel.
We must urge the local and state government to conduct thorough community consultation and to consider reasonable alternatives that align with urban planning principles, environmental preservation and sustainable business growth.
Let’s protect South Perth’s foreshore from becoming a “Northbridge of the South.”
Your objection does not mean you are anti-progress, nor does your signature imply opposition to business growth. Your support is a statement that the lack of meaningful community engagement, the rushed timeline over the Christmas period, and the failure to consider more suitable sites — such as The Point, Burswood or Elizabeth Quay — are unacceptable.
South Perth deserves better.
Please sign this petition to support a more careful and responsible examination of this proposal before 19 January 2026.
