URGENT!! Save Memphis' historic synagogue

URGENT!! Save Memphis' historic synagogue
The Issue
One of Memphis' architectural treasures and most historic houses of worship is in danger of being lost forever. The beautiful and historic former Children of Israel synagogue (1247 Poplar Ave.), which has stood for generations as a beacon of culture, faith, and community, faces demolition unless immediate action is taken to preserve it. It is not just a building; it's a testament to the rich history and diversity of our beloved city. This synagogue has witnessed countless life events, from weddings to memorials, and has served as a gathering place for people from all walks of life.
Memphis is a city that prides itself on heritage and history. We boast of our musical roots on Beale Street and our pivotal role in the civil rights movement. However, preserving a structure like this synagogue is equally critical. Built over a century ago, the synagogue represents an irreplaceable piece of our collective story. Once it's gone, a chapter of our history will be erased, along with the cultural significance that this synagogue holds. With the recent devastating loss of the Clayborn Temple, it is paramount that we safeguard this part of our city's heritage for future generations.
We propose working with current owners and local authorities to grant the synagogue historic landmark status and develop a community-led initiative to rehabilitate the site. Instead of demolition, let's find another use for it such as a multipurpose cultural center that can host events and activities while honoring its original purpose as a place of worship.
Join us in this vital effort to save a cornerstone of Memphis’ history. By signing this petition, you are calling for the preservation of an iconic structure that holds countless memories and stories. Your signature is an important step in ensuring that our city's diverse and vibrant history is not only remembered but also respected and preserved.
Please sign the petition and share it with others who care about preserving the unique historical character of our city.
