Urgent Request for Promised Fare Reductions for Newbridge and Kildare Town

Urgent Request for Promised Fare Reductions for Newbridge and Kildare Town
The Issue
Dear Minister for Transport, Deputy Lawless, and the National Transport Authority,
I am writing to you as a concerned resident of Newbridge/Kildare town to urgently seek answers and demand better transport solutions for our area.
Our community has been informed of yet another delay in the implementation of the new zonal structure by Transport for Ireland (TFI), now pushed back to Q1 2025. This is unacceptable and has significant negative impacts on our residents.
In addition to those currently travelling on the train via Newbridge or Sallins, or those forced to drive or take longer bus journeys, there is another cohort of our residents who are currently locked out from accessing the train due to high costs and who do not have access to a car or alternative transport. Newbridge is a town with high social deprivation, and any further delay to the introduction of reduced fares for Newbridge and Kildare town will severely impact people's ability to access schools, work, and take up college places.
Our needs in Newbridge and Kildare town are for these reduced fares to be implemented as soon as possible. This should be very quickly followed by the introduction of a fleet of town buses (also covered under the new fare capping structure) to ensure every resident, whether they have a car or bike or not, has access from their home to the station.
The continued delays and lack of communication from the NTA and the Minister for Transport are deeply frustrating. We demand:
- Immediate implementation of fare reductions from September 2024, irrespective of the status of Leap Card machines.
- Clear and transparent communication regarding the timeline and milestones for the implementation of the new zonal structure.
It is crucial for our community's well-being and equitable access to opportunities that these measures are taken without further delay.
Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter. I look forward to your prompt response and positive action.
Sincerely,
