The issue

We, the undersigned, call on the Australian Government and relevant law enforcement and national security agencies to review publicly available online content that has generated significant concern within sections of the Iranian-Australian community due to its tone, hostile messaging, and perceived implications for individual wellbeing and broader public confidence.

These concerns relate to material publicly attributed to an individual identified as Arman Mokhtarpour. Publicly circulating content attributed to the individual has been interpreted by some members of the community as intimidating, hostile, and directed toward specific individuals, contributing to fear, distress, and a sense of personal insecurity. Community members have expressed concern that the nature and tone of some communications may go beyond robust political debate or strong opinion and may contribute to an atmosphere of intimidation and harassment within parts of the community.

Public online activity attributed to Arman Mokhtarpour also includes geopolitical commentary referencing matters relating to Iran, Western countries, the Five Eyes alliance, and entities such as the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). In the context of communications perceived by some community members as hostile or intimidating, this content has contributed to ongoing concern within parts of the community regarding the nature and potential impact of these communications.

We further note that Arman Mokhtarpour’s name appears in publicly accessible court listings in Victoria. We acknowledge that the existence of court listings does not imply wrongdoing or determine any legal outcome. However, the presence of these listings, when viewed alongside the online material referenced above, has contributed to further concern among some members of the community and reinforces calls for appropriate review by the relevant authorities.

Given the seriousness of the concerns raised by members of the community, we respectfully call on the appropriate authorities to undertake a fair, impartial, and thorough assessment of any relevant material as they consider appropriate.

We therefore call on the relevant authorities to:

  • Review all publicly available online content attributed to the individual
  • Assess the content raises concerns under Australian laws, including those relating to threats, harassment, or public safety
  • Take any action deemed necessary following that assessment

This request is made in the interest of:

  • Protecting community safety
  • Maintaining public confidence and social cohesion
  • Ensuring that concerning conduct is addressed through appropriate legal channels

We trust that Australia’s institutions will treat these concerns seriously and undertake any assessment they consider appropriate in a fair and objective manner.
