URGENT: Court Deadline in DOMA Case – Contact Congress Today!
The Issue
Dear Marriage Equality Supporter
On Friday, February 25, 2011 the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit gave us just three weeks to ensure that Congress steps up to repeal DOMA. The Obama administration and the State of Massachusetts must agree by March 18, 2011 on a new plan for how the pending DOMA litigation will proceed.
When President Obama declared portions of the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional last week, the Court ordered the administration to develop a plan for the litigation, which involves U.S. Attorney General, Eric Holder, and Massachusetts Attorney General, Martha Coakley, to plan the future of DOMA.
If Congress doesn’t step up quickly to repeal DOMA, the Defense of Marriage Act may continue to put the equality of gay, lesbian, bisexual and trangender couples and families on hold indefinitely.
Anti-gay organizations are ramping up pressure on Congress with a new “Defend DOMA” campaign. A few of our faithful representatives in Congress are proposing legislation to repeal DOMA. To appease their campaign conrtributors, many others in Congress, including the Speaker of the House, John Boehner are vowing to fight to continue defending the unconsitutional aspects of DOMA, instead of focusing on getting Americans back to work and our economy back on track.
Thousands of you have already petitioned your Congressman to repeal DOMA in the challenge filed by the State of Massachusetts. But if you haven’t yet done so, please use this link to send your email right now. Your calls and emails could make the difference – not just for DOMA, but for the future of equality for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people in our nation, and even in nations around the world who follow America's lead.
Over the next three weeks, Congress needs to hear from tens of thousands of Americans demanding that their elected representatives stand up for marriage equality.
Please forward this to at least five friends today by email, Facebook or Twitter, or pick up the phone and call a friend. Whatever the means, I urge you to help get the word out. The future of marriage equality depends on it.
For years, we’ve watched the Republican Party cave in to anti-gay organizations demands that violate our freedoms, all for the sake of a political campaign contribution. Now the mask is off and the Speaker of the House has revealed his true colors, and already shown America that becoming distracted by defending an unconstitutional aspect of DOMA and quelling the rights of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Americans is more important than fulfilling his promises to Americans to create jobs. If Congress doesn’t repeal DOMA soon, it will be too late.
We only have 5 days. We need your action today!
Thank you for your time and consideration, and be sure to follow @GemEnterprise on Twitter for the latest updates as this battle heats up, as we continue to stand against our oppressors every step of the way to EQUALITY, and LIBERTY and JUSTICE for ALL!
