The Issue

I'm writing this petition with a passionate appeal to YouTube - a platform many of us hold dear as a vital source for media, entertainment, and a safe space for the arts. A few years ago, YouTube took down music videos from one of my favorite rock bands, The Pretty Reckless. Specifically, the videos for the songs "Heaven Knows," "Going to Hell," and "Messed Up World" were blocked, much to the disappointment of countless fans. More recently, the band's video for the song "When I Wake Up" has been restricted with a content warning, making it available only to users aged 18 and above.

The Pretty Reckless is known for their bold, unapologetic approach to music and visuals, a style that resonates deeply with their fanbase. Surely, the adult nature of some of their content warrants consideration of age restrictions. However, completely removing or unduly restricting access to these creative works eliminates a vital part of the band's artistic expression from a platform that should ideally cater to diverse audiences.

By reuploading these original videos with appropriate content warnings, YouTube can honor the artistic intent of The Pretty Reckless while ensuring that the platform’s community guidelines are respected. Content warnings are a responsible tool for informing viewers about the nature of the content, allowing adult fans to make informed choices about what they watch.

Many of the band’s fans, including myself, feel deprived of the full experience of their music and artistry without these videos. Fans across the globe, especially those of younger generations who have explored The Pretty Reckless’s discography later on, have not had the opportunity to engage with these iconic visuals that accompany the band’s hard-hitting music tracks.

Therefore, this petition calls upon YouTube to consider the interests of the fans and the band by reinstating these videos with suitable content warnings. Not only will it restore the original experience intended by the band, but it will also promote a more inclusive media environment where art is accessible to its audience under certain guidelines, rather than silenced.

Please join me in asking YouTube to respect both artistic freedom and viewer discretion by signing and sharing this petition. Let's celebrate the legacy of The Pretty Reckless and allow their fans to enjoy the complete experience of their music.
