Urge YouTube to let all minors have channels

Urge YouTube to let all minors have channels
The Issue
For about a year now, I have been posting YouTube content, and it has become a very special and important part of my life. However, my journey as a content creator faced a huge setback recently. My very first YouTube channel got deleted because they assumed I was under 13—despite being 14 at the time. With this deletion, I lost all my subscribers, over 600 videos, and every single post I created. Everything was gone, and the loss was devastating, as it wiped away all the hard work and creativity I had poured into my channel.
Starting afresh, I recreated a YouTube channel from scratch and worked tirelessly to regain my audience. While I am committed to continuing my content creation journey, I want to ensure that other young creators do not have to face the same hardship. YouTube's current policy that restricts minors from having their channel needs to change.
Young creators have voices worth sharing and talents worth showcasing. They bring fresh perspectives, nurture creative skills, and often offer content that's educational and entertaining for viewers of all ages. However, the current restrictive policy that YouTube has in place discriminates against minors and hinders them from expressing their creativity and passion through this powerful platform.
To prevent such unfair deletions, YouTube should reconsider its policies to allow all minors, with parental consent, the opportunity to host their own channels. Alternatively, improved age verification measures would also ensure that channels are not unfairly deleted based on false assumptions about a creator’s age.
There is evidence that allowing youth to engage in creative outlets online positively impacts their development, boosts their self-esteem, and enhances their skill sets in digital literacy and media production. According to a report by Common Sense Media, online activities like content creation can help young individuals learn, collaborate, and engage more productively with technology.
By signing this petition, you will be helping to call upon YouTube to amend their current rules or improve age verification processes, ensuring equal opportunities for all young creators to share their art and voice with the world. Your support can help prevent others from losing their digital footprints and having to rebuild their dreams from scratch. Let us stand together to embrace a better future for young content creators.
