TikTok has soared in popularity, accumulating over 2 billion downloads globally but with it has come a dark side: online bullying. In recent years, a number of bullying cases escalated tragically, leading to victims taking their own lives. Worryingly, Ditch the Label's Annual Bullying Survey 2019 found that half (50%) of TikTok users have experienced bullying or harassment. We believe that ID verification is one crucial step in minimising incidences of bullying on the platform. By implementing an ID verification process, TikTok could help ensure only those who are accountable for their actions can comment or contact other users. A widespread introduction of this mechanism could significantly deter bullies, by raising the fear of being identified and reported. Yet, to date, TikTok has failed to undertake this important measure. We call on TikTok's parent company ByteDance, to make safety and the mental wellbeing of its users a priority by implementing ID Verification on its platform.
