Urge the Waterloo Catholic District School Board to Retain Pride and BLM Flags in Schools

The Issue

I have personally experienced the disheartening impacts of homophobia in Catholic schools. As an alumnus and a member of the 2SLGBTQ+ community, the sight of Pride flags in these schools gave me a sense of recognition and acceptance. Now, the Waterloo Catholic District School Board's plan to remove these flags, along with those of the Black Lives Matter movement, feels like a personal affront. The proposed action not only threatens to deprive current and future students of these symbols of solidarity but also deepens their feelings of marginalization and non-recognition.

Displaying these flags sends a clear message that every student is welcome regardless of their sexual orientation or race. It's vital to remember that Canada's Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees the right to equality and non-discrimination. Schools, particular, have the responsibility to uphold these rights and ensure a safe and inclusive environment for all students.

It is disheartening to learn that, according to Egale Canada, 2SLGBTQ+ students are still four times more likely than their cisgender and heterosexual peers to report being bullied in school. Similarly, Color of Change notes the persistent racial disparities in school discipline, with Black students being disproportionately targeted.

The proposed removal of Pride and BLM flags sends a wrong signal against these realities, diluting the struggles and undermining the rights of minority groups. We need to persuade the Waterloo Catholic District School Board to reconsider its decision. It's a matter of upholding inclusivity, dignity, and respect for all. We insist that symbols representing struggle for rights, unity, and pride like these flags be retained.

Stand with us, let your voice be heard, and demand the School Board reassess their plans. Sign this petition.
