Urge the Tucson City Council to Eliminate Mandatory Parking Minimums

The Issue

As a resident of Tucson, AZ, I have personally witnessed the negative impact of mandatory parking minimums. These arbitrary requirements prevent valuable land from being used for more beneficial purposes such as housing or businesses. They contribute to urban sprawl and perpetuate car dependency.

In our city, countless parking spaces remain unused while potential development opportunities are lost. It is estimated that there are three nonresidential parking spaces for every car in the United States (Chester et al., 2010). This not only wastes valuable land but also contributes to higher rents and prices as the cost of maintaining these spaces is passed on to consumers.

By removing mandatory parking minimums from Tucson City Code, we can allow business and property owners to utilize expensive, unused parking lots for betterment of people - creating more housing options or expanding their businesses which would stimulate local economy.

This change would align with other cities across America that have already taken steps towards reducing or eliminating their own parking minimums like Buffalo and Hartford (Guo & Ren, 2013).

Let's urge our city council members to take action now. Sign this petition if you believe in a future where our city's land is used efficiently and sustainably. Let's make Tucson a place where people come before cars!
