The issue
Fourteen thousand two hundred citizens took a stand and petitioned the NSW Parliament for a Sydney Dive Wreck. This heartfelt plea was sadly ignored when the decision was made to scrap the MV Collaroy instead of transforming it into an artificial reef. The MV Collaroy, a vessel with a storied history, could offer countless environmental and economic benefits as an underwater marvel.
Repurposing the MV Collaroy as a dive wreck would enhance the marine biodiversity in the region, creating a habitat for diverse sea life to flourish. Artificial reefs have been shown to boost fish populations and provide a much-needed sanctuary for marine species. Furthermore, a dive wreck can attract divers and tourists, promoting eco-tourism and injecting valuable funds into the local economy, supporting businesses, and creating jobs.
Ignoring the voices of over 14,000 citizens is not only dismissive but a missed opportunity for progressive environmental stewardship. By rethinking this decision, the NSW Minister for Transport can demonstrate a commitment to innovative environmental practices while honoring community input.
We believe in sustainable solutions that benefit both nature and the community at large. Please join us in urging The Hon. John Graham MLC to reconsider this decision and transform the MV Collaroy into a Sydney Dive Wreck, a landmark that could serve both people and the planet.
Add your name to our petition, and together, let’s advocate for a greener future for Sydney's coastal communities. Help us make our vision for a vibrant marine life and a bustling dive tourism industry a reality by ensuring the MV Collaroy continues to serve our community in a new and meaningful way.
