Urge the Mobile, AL City Council to Allow Us to Repair Our Community Park at Optimist Lake

The Issue

Councilman Josh Woods Says he will support our 25-acre  park restoration if we can show community support! So, Won't You Help Us and Sign this Petition Today?

Highland Park Community Association is unique among other parks in Mobile in that we are a private nonprofit corporation commissioned to steward the waters and parks over 25 acres that have served a greater public purpose for almost 100 years!

In West Mobile Alabama our newly annexed community park is an oasis that vibrates with the symphony of hundreds of songbirds. Our almost 100-year-old civic space serves as a sanctuary for these avian marvels, providing them a home in the heart of our bustling city, making it more than just a patch of green land. This park is a hub of life, respite, and beauty from which we recharge our spirit, filling our time with play, fellowship, and prayers. Not only does it give our children areas to run and explore, and our seniors to relax, but for fans of augmented realities, it is a haven teeming with elusive Pokémon creatures!

Our gatherings for picnics and community meetings all happen here, discussions that shape our neighborhood’s future. Our park offers us a venue for seminars and studies, strengthening our collective consciousness. But now, an imminent need to rehabilitate our beloved place calls our attention. It's no longer the vibrant, safe, clean environment that the community thrives on – it needs our help.

Our pavilion roof is crumbling and needs to be replaced urgently. It needs new paint. Trees with heart rot need to be removed, fences need repair. We have estimates to do all of this at the same time and we have donations to do it. But we need a permit to get the inspection to repair the roof. That is why we are asking you to sign our petition to the City Council.

Statistics from the National Recreation and Parks Association underline the critical role parks play in public health, community building, and environmental sustainability. Our own park, serving for nearly 100 years as a community hub in Highland Park Subdivision, ties into this crucial fabric, making its rehabilitation an essential course of action.[1]

We understand a city's financial dilemma. Still, we believe that with our combined efforts and the council’s support, we can bring back our park's vitality. We are ready to work, ready to contribute, and most importantly, ready to make a change for our treasured park.

This petition seeks the City Council's permission for us, the community, to step in and revive our vital green space. Let's bring back the laughter, the birdsong, and the spirit of community in our beautiful park.

Please, sign and show your support for our plea to the City Council to permit us to do the necessary work to make our park safe to sit, swing, and play in again.
