High school students in New Brunswick are facing an unnecessary restriction: a full-day mobile phone ban for students in Grades 9–12. While limiting phone use during class can be reasonable when devices interfere with learning, banning phones during breaks and lunchtime goes too far. Students should have reasonable access to their phones when they are not participating in instruction.
Mobile phones are more than tools for social interaction. They allow students to communicate with parents and guardians, stay informed about important messages, access educational resources, and manage everyday responsibilities. During breaks and lunch, students should be trusted to use their devices responsibly without disrupting classroom learning.

A full-day ban also does not address the underlying reasons phones can become distracting during class. Rather than relying entirely on prohibition, schools could teach students responsible digital-device use and establish clear expectations for when phones may and may not be used. This would encourage students to develop self-regulation skills that are valuable both inside and outside school.
A more balanced approach could allow phone use during designated breaks and lunchtime while maintaining strict restrictions during instructional time. Schools could also establish designated phone-use areas where students can use their devices without disrupting classes or other students.

We urge the Government of New Brunswick to reconsider the full-day mobile phone restriction for Grades 9–12 and adopt a more balanced policy. Students deserve an approach that protects the learning environment while also recognizing the practical role mobile phones play in modern student life.
