As a committed member of the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) and a passionate believer in the strength of unity, I am deeply concerned about the current political direction our union is taking. Having engaging discussions with fellow station members, it's clear there's a growing discontent among us. Many are contemplating leaving the union, frustrated with the heavy focus on radical left-wing ideologies being promoted at the cost of marginalizing members with right of centre views. We are firefighters united by a common profession and purpose; however, the increasing politicisation is creating divisions where there should be none.

The FBU has always stood as a bastion of support for firefighters, ensuring protection and improvement of our rights, and advancing our professional concerns. This political drift, however, risks weakening our cause. It diverts precious resources away from our primary focus on bettering the conditions and rights of those tirelessly serving as firefighters and control room staff. An apolitical stance would not only return the FBU to its foundational goals but also restore the confidence of its entire membership, irrespective of individual political beliefs.

Statistics indicate that internal divisiveness can lead to reduced member engagement and eventual withdrawal, leading to dwindling membership numbers that could severely hamper the FBU's ability to advocate effectively on behalf of firefighters. If this trend continues, we risk our collective voice being diluted.

We urge the leadership of the Fire Brigades Union to cease the endorsement and promotion of any political ideology and adopt an apolitical stance. This will ensure that we remain focused on the core mission: to protect and champion the rights and welfare of all its members equally. A unified membership is a stronger union.
