The Issue

Portreath is a vibrant seaside village, inhabited by a strong and close-knit community, and cherished by countless visitors. This picturesque village is more than just a destination; it's a home for many and a sanctuary for wildlife. Its stream runs serenely through the centre, acting as a crucial wildlife corridor connecting the land to the sea. However, this delicate balance is under serious threat due to inadequate flood management schemes currently proposed by the Environment Agency.

Flooding poses a dire threat to Portreath. It jeopardizes the safety of our homes, the well-being of our community, and the livelihoods of local businesses. But perhaps most alarmingly, it endangers our natural ecosystem. Our stream does more than flow; it sustains vibrant biodiversity, which is at risk of being decimated by this flood management scheme. In addition, the potential overflow of sewage onto our beloved beach presents a severe health hazard to all beachgoers and marine life.

The current flood alleviation proposal by the Environment Agency is grossly inadequate. It offers neither sea nor surface water protection and provides only a meagre 1 in 20 year storm fluvial protection to approximately 10 houses. Such insufficient measures fail to safeguard the entirety of Portreath from the multifaceted flood challenges it faces. We cannot stand by while our environment, community, and economy risk degradation from subpar planning.

We plead with the Environment Agency to reconsider their strategy and provide Portreath with a comprehensive, effective flood alleviation scheme. This should be a robust plan that encompasses protection against sea, river, and surface water flooding—one that ensures the safety of our villagers and visitors alike while preserving our natural habitats.

Your support is vital in urging the Environment Agency to take immediate and meaningful action. By signing this petition, you will be validating our call for a flood management strategy that genuinely considers the needs of Portreath and its future resilience. Let’s protect Portreath together before it is too late. We do not support the current scheme.
