The issue

Living in Rockingham, WA, the recent changes to our FOGO bin services have become a pressing concern for many of us, myself included. The council’s implementation of a 140-litre red bin, paired with the new fortnightly collection schedule, has proved inadequate for the waste disposal needs of the average household.

Our family, like many others in the community, has found that despite the introduction of the FOGO service, which supposedly helps reduce weekly waste, the actual reduction is a mere 12 litres per week. This small change does not compensate for the decreased frequency of collections, leading to overflowing bins and increased inconvenience for residents. Furthermore, as part of our council rates, we are essentially paying for a service that does not meet our needs.

To put things into perspective, the effectiveness of FOGO services should be measured by their ability to reduce waste significantly, keeping in mind the waste production scale of households. Statistically speaking, a small reduction of 12 litres per week is negligible and does not justify the smaller bin size or the reduced collection frequency. Residents deserve a system that supports a more manageable and efficient waste disposal routine.

It's crucial for the Rockingham Council to reassess the FOGO bin size and collection schedule. There's a pressing need for a more substantial reduction in waste to make the service worthwhile. Larger bin options, or more frequent collections, could be viable solutions that align with both the council's environmental goals and the practical needs of the community.

I urge the Rockingham Council to reconsider their approach to this new FOGO bin service, to ensure it effectively supports all households. Sign this petition to voice your concern and push for a solution that truly meets our community's waste management needs.
