The Issue

In a time where transparency and truth in media are more crucial than ever, many of us have turned to alternative news sources for insight and clarity. However, not all outlets that present themselves as journalists provide unbiased, fact-based reporting. I have become increasingly concerned about the misleading nature of the YouTube channel GB News, which is presenting opinion-led content under the banner of 'News'. This petition aims to persuade Ofcom to enforce a change in how this channel is branded, removing the word 'News' from its title on YouTube.

GB News regularly shares content that appears to prioritise a single political agenda. Its tendency to amplify divisive narratives can be harmful, it creates social rifts and hate.  In misrepresenting themselves as a reliable 'news' outlet, GB News risks misleading their audience, convincing them they are receiving balanced journalism.

According to Ofcom’s Broadcasting Code, an outlet identified as a news channel should be duly committed to presenting news with due impartiality and accuracy. The portrayal of opinions as fact by GB News undermines the credibility of genuine journalism and skews public perception. Notably, a report by the Reuters Institute highlights the critical importance of maintaining public trust in news media, underscoring the potential damage caused by outlets that do not adhere to these principles.

The significance of this rebranding goes beyond mere semantics. It is about upholding journalistic standards and ensuring that all media labeled as "news" meets the expectations of accuracy and impartiality. It is imperative that viewers can differentiate between opinion and fact-based reporting to make informed decisions about their society.

We propose that Ofcom directs GB News to align its branding more accurately with its content style—currently opinion-focused commentary—by removing the misleading term 'News' from their YouTube channel. This action will set a precedent ensuring accountability and clarity in media representations across digital platforms.

Join us in calling on Ofcom to take a stand for accurate media portrayal and protect the integrity of British journalism. Sign this petition to ensure that content on platforms like YouTube is honestly advertised, reducing misinformation and fostering a more informed public debate over crucial societal issues.
