Urge NCAA to Recognize Dancing as a Sport

Urge NCAA to Recognize Dancing as a Sport
The Issue
My daughter, now 8, has been immersed in the world of dance for each of her precious years. Heading into her 8th year, she practices relentlessly, pouring her heart into every pirouette and leap, evoking awe and admiration from those who witness her perform. Unfortunately, these considerable endeavours are overlooked, as the NCAA disremembered and failed to acknowledge the art and skill of dancing by not classifying it as a sport. This deprivation denies dancers such as my daughter the opportunity to apply for athletic scholarships that other athletes readily qualify for. The unfair treatment towards these luminary figures who, like any other athletes, dedicate countless hours honing their technique, disrespects the blood, sweat, and tears they've shed for their art.
Approximately 2.5 million American children take up gymnastics, figure skating, and ballet - activities that are both highly analogous to dance. Yet dance remains uniquely overlooked. A study conducted by the University of Hertfordshire found dancers are much stronger in several key areas than the Royal British Marines. Yet dance remains overlooked.
This petition seeks justice for my daughter and the millions of dancers who devote their lives to their passion. If dance commands the same dedication, discipline and strain as other sports, it ought to be afforded the same recognition. Failure to do so not only disregards the tireless efforts and talent of these young athletes, it also continues to perpetuate outdated views and stereotypes surrounding this physically and mentally demanding art form.
Stand with us in requesting the NCAA to rectify this glaring oversight and recognize competitive dancing as a sport. Sign the petition and ensure deserving dancers achieve their rightful recognition and support. This will ensure a better, fairer future for all dancers.
