Urge Medicaid to Cover and Reimburse IBCLC-Provided Lactation Services

The Issue

As a devoted International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) working in the heart of Delaware, I've witnessed the struggle many families go through due to lack of access to feeding support. There are certainly programs that aim to provide lactation services for families who are Medicaid recipients, but as a whole we have a huge care gap here.
It is critical to acknowledge that breastfeeding is not a privilege, but a fundamental right to provide human milk to newborns and infants. However, it's distressing to see how many families with Medicaid are being denied the comprehensive support they need and deserve.
Research suggests that access to an IBCLC can significantly improve breastfeeding rates and duration, which have been associated with numerous health benefits for both mother and child. Unfortunately, Delaware's current system lacks the ability to provide state-wide, quality lactation care to Medicaid beneficiaries.
Through this petition, we are urging Medicaid to recognize this essential service by covering and reimbursing lactation services provided by a non-physician IBCLC. By doing so, we can ensure that all families, regardless of their socioeconomic status, have equal access to crucial lactation support. Right now for families with Medicaid, there are few resources they can utilize.
We get calls weekly from Medicaid MCO insurances asking if we offer services, so we know there is a huge need!
An in-network contract with non-physician IBCLC’s who provide services in the private practice sector is KEY!
The time to prioritize lactation care is now. Verbally commit to standing up for the rights of families across Delaware. Support us in this fight for equitable access to lactation care. Sign the petition.
