Urge Governor Soludo to Conduct Local Government Elections in Anambra State
The Issue
Local government elections were last conducted in Anambra State on January 11, 2014. This means that, since approximately 24 years after the return of democracy in Nigeria in 1999, local government elections have only been held once in Anambra State. The democratic system thrives on the active participation of its citizens, and local government elections are a crucial part of this process. Unfortunately, in Anambra, Nigeria, we have witnessed a regrettable delay in these elections under Charles Soludo's government, despite his promise to hold them in his inauguration address. This delay undermines the democratic rights of the people and hampers local development initiatives. According to Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution (as amended), local governments should be governed by democratically elected officials (Chapter VII, Section 7). Yet, this constitutional provision is not being upheld in Anambra. We call upon Charles Soludo's government to respect our constitutional rights and immediately schedule local government elections. Stand up for democracy in Anambra - sign this petition today!
