The Issue

The Labour government has already taken steps to delay the 2025 West Sussex County Council elections as well as the 2026 Sussex Mayoral elections. Now, reports indicate that they have approached the West Sussex County Council and Worthing Borough Council to propose postponing this year’s elections.

Enough is enough. This interference is deeply unsettling. Capacity constraints are not a legitimate reason for delaying long planned elections. The right to vote in scheduled elections is fundamental to our democracy. Tampering with election dates undermines public trust in democratic institutions and processes. Regularly scheduled elections are a cornerstone of participatory government, and any shift in these should be met with intense scrutiny and deliberation by the affected public.

We, the undersigned residents of Worthing, call on Councillor Sophie Cox, Leader of Worthing Borough Council, to publicly commit to holding the scheduled Worthing Borough Council elections as planned.

Worthing Green Party petition Councillor Cox to uphold the election schedule as initially planned. We must take a step towards preserving our local democracy and ensuring that Worthing continues to thrive under a government that truly represents its citizens.

Please sign this petition and help safeguard our democratic processes. Worthing Greens believe in the democratic process, let's hope Labour does too.
