I am reaching out to you with a deeply personal struggle that I know many veterans share. I am a 100% disabled veteran, totally and permanently rated as such due to my service-connected conditions. After a grueling 14-year battle with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to prove my case, I was finally recognized for the disabilities that have permanently altered my life. However, despite this recognition, I find myself in yet another battle — this time with the Social Security Administration (SSA) for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). For the past one and a half years, I have been fighting to get the SSDI support I need and deserve, but the SSA does not recognize my VA disability status in their decision-making process.

This is not just my story; it is the story of countless veterans who face the same unfair challenges. Veterans who have been deemed 100% Total and Permanent (T&P) disabled by the VA should not have to restart their battle for recognition and support from the systems that are supposed to protect them. The current process forces us to place our welfare through numerous opinionated desks, subject to repeated scrutiny, despite having already proven our cases.

This duplicative process not only delays the much-needed support but also adds undue stress and burden on veterans and their families. Veterans like me, who have fought bravely for our country, should not have to fight again for our well-being. The SSA's failure to recognize the 100% T&P rating given by the VA creates unnecessary hurdles and denies us the dignity and respect we deserve.

We need a change in policy. The SSA must automatically recognize and accept a 100% T&P disability rating from the VA as sufficient proof for SSDI qualification. This would streamline the process for veterans, reduce administrative burdens, and expedite access to crucial benefits.

It's time for the SSA to acknowledge the link between VA and SSA disability determinations and show respect towards those who served their country.
