For the second time, a small group of University of Wyoming sorority sisters is asking a federal appeals court to reopen a case that has already been dismissed twice — this time targeting the University of Wyoming chapter of Kappa Kappa Gamma for admitting a transgender member, Artemis Langford, through a vote of its own members.

Twice, a U.S. District Court judge in Wyoming ruled that courts have no business telling a private, voluntary organization who it can and cannot admit, since the sorority is free to determine its own membership. Kappa's attorney, Natalie McLaughlin, told the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals this week that "the operative membership requirement never changed," and that the sorority's governing council simply exercised "the precise interpretive authority that the standing rules gave them."

Despite two dismissals, the plaintiffs are pushing the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals to reverse course and revive a lawsuit that could let courts, instead of members, override how a private organization defines its own community. If successful, this appeal wouldn't just affect one sorority chapter — it could open the door to challenging transgender students' inclusion in campus organizations everywhere.

Kappa's members already voted on this. Two courts have already ruled on it. It's time for this case to stay closed.
