Upgrade West Footscray Skatepark

The issue

West Footscray skatepark is small, poorly designed and often floods from lack of drainage. As a result, it is unpractical and underused. The skatepark desperately needs an upgrade to service the local skate community and to foster the skills of young and upcoming skaters.

Neighbouring council area Brimbank has recognised this need and built two world-class skate plazas in the last five years, with another in the works for 2023. West Footscray skatepark could be upgraded to a world-class skate plaza, using the available space on the Essex St. side of Johnson Reserve. The council is aware that the skatepark needs upgrading, with reference to this in the Johnson Reserve 2020 master plan. No solid commitment has been made yet however.

Local, skater-owned companies such as Grind Projects and Baseplate have designed and built excellent facilities recently in other local council areas. Their expertise could be used in the consultation and building stage to create an integrated and welcoming space.

We call on Maribyrnong Council to upgrade this skatepark for the local community.
