Upgrade the Karai-Naivasha Stretch of Nairobi-Nakuru Highway to Save Lives

The Issue

Dear Fellow Kenyans and Concerned Citizens,

The Karai-Naivasha stretch of the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway has earned a tragic reputation as a deadly blackspot, claiming countless lives in preventable accidents. Just days ago, on January 5, 2026, a horrific crash involving a Greenline bus and a 14-seater matatu left 9 people dead, including a Catholic catechist, his wife, and their two children and 55 others injured. Survivors and witnesses report that the bus driver was speeding, possibly drunk or exhausted, leading to a head-on collision that turned a family reunion into unimaginable heartbreak.

This is not an isolated incident. The Karai area has seen a string of fatal accidents, with the death toll rising alarmingly. In just the first six days of 2026, at least 31 lives have been lost on Kenyan roads, many on this notorious stretch. Families are demanding probes, but investigations alone won't stop the carnage. Poor road design, inadequate safety features, and lack of upgrades are fueling these tragedies. Narrow lanes, sharp bends, insufficient signage, and the absence of barriers or medians allow for reckless overtaking and head-on crashes, turning what should be a vital transport route into a death trap.

We cannot wait for more families to be wiped out. It's time for decisive action to redesign and upgrade this blackspot. We call on the Kenyan government, specifically the Ministry of Roads and Transport, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), and relevant stakeholders, to implement an immediate action plan:

1. Conduct a Comprehensive Safety Audit: Engage experts to assess the entire Karai-Naivasha section for design flaws, including curves, visibility, and traffic flow.

2. Upgrade Infrastructure: Widen the road & convert the two-way road into a one-way couplet , install median barriers, add rumble strips, improve lighting, and construct pedestrian overpasses or underpasses to prevent collisions.

3. Allocate Emergency Funding: Prioritize budget for these upgrades in the 2026 fiscal year, drawing from national road safety funds to ensure swift implementation.

By signing this petition, you join grieving families, survivors, and communities in demanding real change. Let's honor the victims of the Karai crash and prevent future losses. Together, we can make our roads safer for everyone, drivers, passengers, and pedestrians alike.

Sign now and share widely. Every signature brings us closer to safer highways and fewer broken families.

Thank you for your support.
