The Issue

I am writing to bring attention to an issue that has long affected the hard-working emergency department (ED) reception team at Homerton Hospital. While other administrative staff are classified as Band 4, the reception team is unjustly placed at Band 2. This discrepancy fails to acknowledge the crucial 24-hour service they provide and the critical nature of the tasks they handle.

The reception team at Homerton Hospital is the first point of contact for patients seeking emergency care. They manage high-pressure situations, ensuring that patient information is accurate and that the ED staff is informed and ready to provide the best possible care. Their role is pivotal in maintaining the hospital's efficiency and ensuring that patients receive timely treatment.

Despite their essential contributions, the reception team is not fairly compensated or recognized in terms of salary banding. Band 4 would not only provide a fair wage for their dedicated service but also align their compensation with similar roles within the hospital. The lack of equitable pay and recognition can lead to low morale, decreased motivation, and a higher turnover rate, which can ultimately impact the quality of care provided to patients.

According to the Agenda for Change pay scale, Band 4 employees typically have higher responsibilities and a wider skill set. It is clear that the ED reception team’s duties align more with those expected of Band 4 personnel. By upgrading their banding, we honor their skill, commitment, and the complex nature of their work. This change would recognize the indispensable contribution they make to the NHS and set a precedent for valuing those on the front line of emergency healthcare.

We call on the management of Homerton Hospital and relevant NHS bodies to reevaluate the banding structure and upgrade the reception team in the Emergency Department to Band 4. This change is necessary to ensure fairness, improve job satisfaction, and, most importantly, maintain the high standard of care that the community deserves.

Please join me in supporting this cause by signing this petition. Together, we can make a positive change for those who are a vital part of our healthcare system. Your support is crucial in advocating for a fair and just work environment at Homerton Hospital. Sign this petition to call for band equity for our dedicated ED reception team.
