Update Youth Justice Laws to Address Rising Youth Crime
Update Youth Justice Laws to Address Rising Youth Crime
The issue
Our community deserves to feel safe.
Across Ballarat, more and more families are speaking out about serious incidents involving youth violence, intimidation, assaults, car theft, and robbery. Parents are increasingly fearful for their children’s safety when they simply walk home, go to school, or spend time in public spaces.
Recent reports shared by local families describe groups of teens attacking individuals, filming assaults, stealing vehicles, threatening young people with weapons, and targeting other kids who are simply trying to live normal lives. Some victims have ended up in hospital. Many others are left traumatised and afraid.
Parents, shop owners, and community members say they have reported incidents to authorities, shared evidence, and asked for help — yet they feel their concerns are not being taken seriously enough.
This petition is not about demonising young people. Most teenagers are good kids who want to live safely in their community. However, when serious crimes occur, there must be meaningful consequences and intervention to protect victims and prevent further harm.
Right now, many families feel that the current system is failing victims and allowing repeat offenders to continue harming others.
We are calling on local leaders and justice authorities to review and strengthen youth crime responses in Ballarat so that:
- Victims are protected
- Serious youth crime is addressed
- Repeat offenders face appropriate consequences
- Early intervention and prevention programs are strengthened
- Community safety is prioritised
Parents should not have to fear for their children’s safety in their own community.
Ballarat deserves action.
Sign this petition to demand stronger action, accountability, and real solutions to youth crime in our community.
