Update Hollywood, FL Swale Parking Law from 1987

The Issue

The parking regulations from 1987 that dictate swale parking in Hollywood no longer serve our community's needs. In district 6, apartment buildings constructed in the 1960s and 70s provide residents with just one assigned parking spot each, and painfully lack any guest parking. This situation leaves us with the swale as the only viable option for overflow and guest parking.

Residents, especially older individuals who depend on caregivers and aides, face severe challenges. There are simply not enough legal parking options, impacting their daily lives and well-being. They need safe and accessible parking close by, not further down the street or, worse yet, nonexistent.

Moreover, this outdated law aims to address flooding issues by restricting swale parking to 45 hours a week, an approach that is ineffective and unreasonable. Drains and infrastructure solutions would better solve flooding without further complicating our parking woes.

Updating the swale parking law would protect resident’s access to necessary parking, aid in caregiver responsibilities, and ensure our community supports the needs of its people. We urge the local authority to review this outdated regulation and implement a more sustainable solution that recognizes today’s parking demands.

Sign this petition to call for a necessary update to reflect the modern needs of our community and to ensure Hollywood, FL becomes a city that accommodates all its residents respectfully and practically.
