Unlock Justice: Support Donald Taylor!!!
The Issue
Dear Community Members,
We come together to petition for justice and the resentencing or retrial of Donald Taylor, who has been unfairly incarcerated for the past 14 years in the Nevada Department of Corrections under a sentence of “Life Without Possibility of Parole.”
Donald’s story is not just one of injustice and systemic failure, but one of resilience and struggle. Donald’s unjust conviction, compounded by inadequate legal representation by an incompetent attorney, who had not properly investigated to defend him. Moreover, he was unfairly, excessively & disproportionately sentenced, a consequence of being a young, unknowledgeable in law Black American man in the state of Nevada, where racial injustices against Black Americans are prevalent. It is evident that his circumstances at the time of his conviction were not taken into proper consideration. Being 28 years of age at the time of the arrest in 2010, he had No Violent Criminal History.
Black Americans have historically been over sentenced in the State of Nevada, but not just Nevada, in fact over sentencing amongst Black men and women is a nationwide, systemic issue! As a whole due to economic racial & systematical injustices Black men and women are virtually sentenced to die in prisons.
We as humans should not be callous at heart!!! We should care about our people!
For the past 14 years of his incarceration, Donald has been separated from his 5 daughters, in which the youngest twin daughters age 14, has never had the ability to have their father present. Certainly a loss that has deeply affected him and his family. He is now a grandfather of 2 with another on the way. A son of a single mother well into her years who raised him along with 3 other children, who also adopted children throughout the years. And he also has a very supportive loving fiancé.
During Donald’s time behind bars, he has utilized the last 14 years of his incarceration to personally reflect on life changes to become a better person. Donald has worked tirelessly on self-improvement, taking several programming classes and has obtained numerous certificates, demonstrated his commitment to rehabilitation and growth in hope to have an opportunity to be a productive part of society again.
It is unjust to continue to punish Donald Taylor for mistakes made in his youth, especially considering his efforts to better himself during his time in prison. We call upon the legal system to review Donald’s case with fairness and compassion, taking into account the systemic injustices he has faced and his dedication to self-improvement.
His large family and community urges the appropriate authorities to grant Donald Taylor a resentencing or retrial that reflects the true essence of justice, one that considers his background, circumstances, and efforts toward rehabilitation. It is time to right the wrongs of the past and allow Donald to reunite with his loved ones and give a 2nd chance to fulfill his dream of working towards building a life where he can be an asset to society by providing mentorship to the youth.
“Without imperfection, neither you nor I would exist”
Everyone deserves a second chance and so does Donald.
