Ameena Dee started this petition to University of Winchester

During the first lockdown, students received extended deadlines, to help them deal with the crisis, as they were being forced to move back home. This time, students are being kept in university halls away from their families during this lockdown. Some like me, are living alone.

We are currently receiving little support from the university. Many students have said that they weren't allowed to go home, even if they had mental health problems. We are incredibly lonely, and the university hasn't put anything in place to reduce that. I called the wellbeing team, to ask if they had anything to help me find friends, and the only thing they did was recommend a workshop for building close friendships, which didn't help my problem of not being able to find people to talk to and likely didn't apply to online interactions.

Many students have mental health issues, especially with lockdown this year, and are unable to access or benefit from mental health services. Some students are even experiencing suicidal ideation, Suicide rates have increased this year and will keep rising if we continue to ignore young people. We're in lockdown to reduce overall death rates and help public health, not to increase health issues and death rates through the lockdown. Just like we stay indoors to help vulnerable people, we need to help our vulnerable students and this is the first step to doing it.

As aforementioned, the university has a wellbeing team and short term counselling. This isn't enough for us. Students have been dealing with a lot this year, and there are students with family problems, those who are estranged and have no one to turn to. We need extended deadlines to help manage our stress levels.

Please sign this petition to help the student mental health crisis.
