No Detriment Policy for the University of West London Assessments.

The Issue

I am calling for the University of West London to follow in the footsteps of other leading UK universities, such as Exeter, Edinburgh and Warwick by implementing a no-detriment policy (safety net) for the end of year exams and assessments. The unprecedented impact of COVID-19 means that we now have limited access to teaching (face-to-face), resources, and no access to learning environments such as university libraries, study areas and practical rehearsal spaces. This as you could imagine is a vital element to the courses at this university particularly the vocational courses whereby the majority of the course is practical.

Following the closure of the University, many students will find themselves in environments un-conducive with studying. This petition is asking the University of West London to take into account these extraordinary and unprecedented conditions, with the introduction of a no-detriment policy. Many students will be struggling to study due to lack of appropriate working conditions, environments and resources, as well as being negatively impacted by mental or physical illness during this terrifying time. This no-detriment policy is necessary to ensure a justifiable chance of achievement for all students.

I believe this is the only way the university can fairly grade any assignments/exams left for this academic year.

Not only is the environment completely different having to work/revise at home given that most people find the use of the library and rehearsal rooms a critical part of revising/practicing.

You have also got to take into account everyone’s situations, people who may not have access to a laptop or computer during this lockdown are now put at an unfair disadvantage over the next coming weeks/months as they have no way completing any assessments created. If we come out with lowering grades because of differing policies between different universities, we may be at a disadvantage when it comes to employability.

Many other students are calling out for changes to be implemented including; University of Leeds, University of Manchester, Northumbria University, Newcastle University, University of York, Queen's University Belfast, University College London, and Warwick University.
