Why this petition matters

On Monday, November 2, 2020 at 11:30am, students of the MBBS/DDS Class of 2023 received an email citing that "The Campus Committee on Examinations has determined that there was a serious breach in the security of the exam for MDSC3200 Understanding Research prior to its administration on Friday October 9, 2020. As such the exam will have to be re-administered." With the date for the re-administration of the examination slated for Monday November 9, 2020 at 10:00am Jamaica time (9:00am EC time).

Since the announcement, students have been sent into an upheaval. There are several reasons to warrant the students' egregious disagreement with and condemnation of this decision:
1. A decision made to implement a re-sit despite ongoing investigation that has not yet yielded a formal report.
2. The timing of the notice is in violation of article 10 (b) and article 85 (a) of the Assessment Regulations for First Degrees, Associate Degrees, Undergraduate Diplomas and Certificates.
3. Members of MBBS/DDS Class 2023, MBBS/DDS Class of 2022 and the Occupational Environment Safety and Health Students from the Faculty of Science and Technology are in the midst of classes, clinicals or examinations.
4. Members of the MBBS Class of 2022 are pending matriculation due to the requirement of a pre-requisite grade (DENT/MDSC3200 Understanding Research).
5. Members of the MBBS Class of 2023 are unable to register for 2020/2021 Semester 2 due to the requirement of a pre-requisite grade (DENT/MDSC3200 Understanding Research).
6. Negative effects on mental health of students due to lack of thorough communication (information re: security breach) and inconsideration of schedules (slating less than a week until re-administration of an examination whilst being in the midst of classes, clinicals or examinations), being among the general reasons; though not accounting for individual students' circumstances.

In lieu of the DENT/MDSC3200, Understanding Research re-sit examination request by the Faculty of Medical Science, UWI, Mona, we the members of the MBBS/DDS Class 2023, MBBS/DDS Class of 2022 and the Occupational Environment and Safety and Health Students from the Faculty of Science and Technology have read, understood and agreed to the following as an alternative to the re-administration of the examination:

To utilize the results of two Understanding Research Quizzes and Paper 2 of the Understanding Research Examination grades. The weighting of results should be as follows:

Quiz 1 - 37.5%
Quiz 2 - 37. 5%
Paper 2 of Understanding Research Examination - 25%

Please note that once weighting is completed, the administration of grades should hereby be in the form of pass or fail without penalty (no fee required for re-sit and ability to obtain a grade above a letter grade of C).

All the undersigned are in total agreement with the final grade to be awarded based on the above contributing grades and conditions.
