James Russ started this petition to Professor Ian White (Vice-Chancellor and President at University of Bath) and

Appeal for BANES council and the University of Bath to urgently review the decision to postpone July 2021 graduations.

Despite the UK government guidance allowing for distanced graduation ceremonies, the recent unexpected postponement of University of Bath July graduations is hugely disappointing. The decision follows advice from the Director of Public Health of BANES Council, who raised concerns about events such as our graduation ceremonies, even though the University of Bath has been working tirelessly to deliver a safe, socially distanced experience, in-line with all current restrictions. This last minute decision, being driven by a desire to stop people coming to Bath, is likely to be ineffective, since many students and families will have already booked non-refundable accommodation and will proceed with their own celebrations regardless.

The families staying in Bath will also be supporting many local businesses who have been particularly hard hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Furthermore, the advice from BANES council is not in-line with the latest government guidance and it is inconsistent that university graduations should be targeted, especially as other similar events have not been cancelled. This includes Bath Rugby games, which have allowed crowds such as the game against Northampton on the 21st June drawing in 3000 supporters from across the country. Moreover, festivals are also going ahead according to current restrictions and advice, this even includes Bath events such as the Bath Festival with acts such as McFly scheduled only one week after final graduations.

Furthermore, the fact that such ceremonies have recently and safely been carried out by Cambridge University, makes the latest announcement especially challenging for all students and families to understand.

We are immensely grateful for the time and effort the University of Bath has already committed to delivering a safe and distanced ceremony, and it seems a complete shame for all of this effort to go to waste in postponing the graduation unnecessarily.

Finally, the decision comes at only 2 weeks notice, leaving families with no option to cancel accommodation and plans. We urgently request that this decision be repealed to enable the celebration of students' achievements. These students have worked extremely hard over the past 2 years under very difficult circumstances, and are absolutely devastated that there might be no ceremony.

Please sign this petition to help graduating students celebrate safely and properly after years of hard work!
