The lack of universal healthcare in the United States is not just a moral failure, but an economic burden. More than 28 million Americans are uninsured, with countless others underinsured, which leads to preventable deaths and unnecessary suffering. Those without adequate healthcare avoid essential medical check-ups and treatments, often leading to more severe health complications that are both expensive and tragic. Currently, the U.S. stands alone among developed nations in not providing universal healthcare. This contributes to a system where healthcare becomes a privilege rather than a basic human right, leaving the less fortunate behind.

I argue in my book, The AI Dividend: Reclaiming Prosperity in the Age of Machines,  that as corporations rely increasingly on Artificial Intelligence to boost productivity and replace human labor, health care can no longer be tied to employment and funded via payroll deductions. It must be funded by corporate profits. Corporations that reduce head count must meet their social responsibility to fund universal health care. Corporate profits reached a record $2.53 trillion in 2025. A modest tax adjustment could generate billions in revenue earmarked for healthcare without significantly impacting these corporations’ bottom lines. By reallocating this wealth, we can create a healthier, more productive society as healthier citizens result in better economic performance.

Moreover, studies have shown that universal healthcare systems lead to longer lifespans, lower infant mortality rates, and overall better public health outcomes. It’s time for the United States to catch up with other developed countries and provide its citizens with equitable access to healthcare. Implementing universal healthcare funded by corporate taxes can lead to a fairer society, where all Americans can thrive. It is not only possible but necessary. Let us move towards a healthcare model that prioritises people over profits.
