Save the Oceans from Pollution
Save the Oceans from Pollution
The Issue
What is happening to the oceans because of pollution ? Have you noticed ? Well this is related to our problem which we are discussing. This is related to the SDG 14 . So what is the SDG 14 ? SDG 14 is addressing, conserving and protecting life below water from pollution caused by human activity. The SDG stands for sustainable development goals which is by the United Nations.
A giant problem for the earth right now is the rapidly deteriorating condition of oceans and marine life. Most ocean pollution comes from land in the form of Non-point pollution or runoff: which is one of the largest sources of ocean pollution. Runoff can come from urban and agricultural areas. Runoff from agricultural land includes things like pesticides, excess fertilizer ,herbicides, and insecticides. While runoff from urban areas include things like Oil, grease and toxic chemicals come from roads and highways. All these things flow into rainwater and travel over and under the ground until they end up in the oceans. These pollutants can be hazardous to humans, wildlife and smother marine plants and coral reefs. litter, debris and plastic can be carried by the wind and also end up on the oceans surface.
Toxic waste also pose a threat to the oceans as when they are released into the sea, they can enter the food chain and eventually be consumed by humans. Toxic waste can come from farming, construction, water treatment systems and other industries. Agricultural waste can be biologically hazardous and raise sea temperatures.
Every year 8 million metric tons of plastic enters the oceans, which gets added to the estimated 150 million that already resides in it. Things like plastic bags, six pack rings and fishing nets are dangerous for marine wildlife as they can entangle sea creatures and restrict their movements. This means that they can potentially injure, strangle or starve them. Dolphins, crabs, sea turtles and sea birds are especially at risk.
Carbon dioxide can also flow into oceans through rain water which can increase ocean acidity levels. Ocean acidity makes it harder for reef-building corals to produce skeletons. Over 1 million species depend on coral habitats to thrive. Excessive carbon dioxide levels can also dissolve shells of marine animals.
There are recent reports that have many oil leaks in the oceans or the seas in 2020. Why are oil leaks affecting the biodiversity or the ecosystem of life below water ? Well oil leaks are just as important like plastic pollution in water, a lot of animals and coral reefs die because of this pollution. Animals like whales and dolphins have blowholes and this oil clogs the blowholes which makes it harder for those animals to breathe in and sometimes these animals suffocate and die.
The clean blue water turns into black misty water because of the oil leaks, sometimes there are some fires caused by this spill because oil is flammable. This fire produces smoke which causes air pollution. The thick oil makes it very hard for animals to see since it blocks all the sunlight out and by making it pitch black for them.
One place that experiences heavy water pollution is Mumbai. The sea around Mumbai is heavily polluted. Juhu beach is one place which is heavily polluted with microplastic (small pieces of plastic that pollute the environment). The reason it's so polluted can be due to recreational or religious activities. The reason why Mumbai's sea is so polluted can be attributed to many causes, one being the heavy rains of Mumbai which wash tons of garbage into the ocean. The Arabian sea may also contribute as lots of sewage waste is released there, which could travel into the Indian ocean.
So what is the solution for this ? So we can use the 3 r's which is recycle, reuse and reduce. The 3 r's are the ones that can help reduce and stop global warming and ocean pollution. For example we can reuse glass into different things and also plastic into different ways there are so many DIYs for different materials. We can also reduce the amount of waste we are producing from our homes. We can think what do we really need. This will stop any unnecessary waste from our homes. Lastly we can recycle materials and make it in to new products, by this we have to give these materials to an recycling factory where they recycle materials.
There are many other ways we can also reduce this pollution another one is by having ocean cleanups. Tourists and localist goes to the beaches and have a brilliant day and they throw their trash everywhere without cleaning it up. This increases the amount of trash going into the sea .So there should be laws and communities helping to reduce the waste as much as possible. This trash will soon get washed away into the sea and the animals will choke on it and die.
Sign our petition to help animals who are affected by human activities and give them a voice. Let us speak for these animals and join as an community to help the world fight this climate change. Together we can hope for a better future for the future generations.
